10 Reasons to Love Caledonia

  • bit.ly

Caledonia Township, which includes the Village of Caledonia, is a West Michigan community that provides its residents with scenic views, family events, and thriving businesses. Located on the southern border of Kent County, the Township is one of the fastest growing in West Michigan. Although it aims to maintain a small town feel, it’s close enough to downtown GR to take in the big city whenever you want.

There are plenty of reasons why those who live and work in the community love it so much but here are a few…

//The Caledonia Farmers Market//

Every Saturday from May to October, those who live in the township can enjoy the fresh, local produce offered by the vendors at the Caledonia Farmers Market.  The Caledonia Farmers Market is now held on the east side of M-37 in the parking area of Caledonia Plaza (north of Caledonia Hardware Store near the intersection of M-37 and 100th Street).

//Parks and Trails//

Caledonia Township is a lovely, scenic community with many parks and trails running through it. These include the Paul Henry Trail which is a paved trail system that connects the Village of Caledonia to Gaines Township and Kentwood. It is ideal for rollerblading and biking. Lepard Park is a nature preserve which is a great place for hiking. Need a location for a wedding reception or family outing? The Caledonia Lake Side Park has a beautiful building – it says “enclosed shelter” on the website but don’t let that fool you, it’s pretty spectacular (see image below).

Caledonia Township offers a selection of many excellent schools, starting at preschool and going straight through to college. These include public and private schools for grades K-12, Davenport University and only a couple miles away is the West Michigan Aviation Academy.

//Caledonia Chamber of Commerce//

It is great when a community has an organization that is constantly overseeing its wellbeing.  The Caledonia Township has its own Chamber of Commerce that makes sure the community is improving. Their goal is to see to it that their residents can enjoy a healthy, happy environment with thriving businesses, community organizations and a number of events they can participate in.

//Caledonia Branch Library//

Nothing provides a sense of community quite like a library. The Caledonia branch features a local history room, a community room, public computers, wireless internet, study rooms, a fireplace and quiet reading area, a garden, an outdoor deck and vending services.

//Caledonia Community Garden//

The community garden provides a beautiful, peaceful haven for the township’s residents. The garden was planted in stages, so there are multiple harvests throughout the summer. The produce from the garden is available to all residents. There are volunteering opportunities as well.

“The garden is filled with vegetables ranging from Arugula to Zucchini, many succulent herbs and fragrant flowers.” Via Caledonia United Methodist Chruch

//Community Events//

To help develop a sense of community, the township and other organizations have a number of events that residents and visitors can participate in throughout the year. These include Western Week, Harvest Festival, and many different holiday parades. One of the most anticipated events in the area is CowPie Music Festival, a perfect summer weekend of camping, music and other entertainment.

LOCAL SPINS SAYS, “Cowpie is more than a music festival. It’s a rite of passage, it’s Woodstock in miniature, it’s an underrated high-water mark of West Michigan’s summer.” –JOHN SINKEVICS, AUG. 8, 2017

Any season, you can catch the residents on a lake in the area. During the Summer catch all the boats, complete with parades, fireworks, and water sports on these lakes:  Duncan, Campau/Kettle (Alto, MI but still), Green Lake and more. Just because Summer is over doesn’t mean lake living is done. Both Fall and Spring are boating seasons in these parts and fishermen love the calm waters and less boat traffic.

Thornapple River is a favorite of tubers and kayakers during summer – launching at 84th Street by the dam, the couple hour float down the river typically ends at Ruehs Park located on 68th Street (depending on the current).

Winter isn’t just for hibernation around the Caledonia area. During the chilly months, lakes are used for ice fishing, skating, and (when the lake it properly frozen over) snow drags, complete with ATV’s and snowmobiles of all kinds.

//The Reindeer Farm//

The Gizmo & Gadget’s Reindeer Farm is an unusual thing to have in any area but lucky for the folk in Caledonia, it’s practically in their backyard. Meet the reindeer at the farm OR host an even with live reindeer, year-round.  It’s a little piece of the North Pole here in the GR area.
