Biggest Sandwiches in Grand Rapids REVEALED

Sandwiches are pretty great.  That’s a statement I think is safe to say not many would dare argue against.  But what’s better than a sandwich you might ask?

Well, I’ll tell ya…A GIANT SANDWICH!

If you’re sick and tired of normal-sized sandwiches and are on the lookout for the best GIANT SANDWICH this city has to offer than you’ve come to the right place. The hope behind this article is to narrow down that search for all my fellow sandwich enthusiasts out there.

If you are looking for a giant jersey style sub in Grand Rapids look no further than Boardwalk Subs’ #19 Everything Sub.  This 14-inch behemoth is loaded up with seven, yes I said seven, different types of meat! We’re talking Ham, Capicola, Salami, Prositini,  Pepperoni, Roast Beef, and Turkey.

If you have not heard of one of these meats before or if you are unsure what one of them might taste like just ask for a sample.  One of Boardwalk Subs’ friendly sandwich experts would be more than happy to offer you one. Once they have loaded up your sub with this delicious assortment of meats it’s up to you to choose any combination of fresh veggies and house-made sauces you would like opening up nearly limitless possibilities of giant sandwich combinations for you to choose from.

SANDWICH PROTIP: Next time you are at one of Boardwalk Subs locations try “Going Rouge” with your sandwich order.  “Going Rouge” is an off-menu option and when ordered this way your bread will be seasoned, oiled, and grilled before being placed on your sandwich UPSIDE DOWN creating a very unique and flavorful experience.  WARNING: This may just change the way you sandwich forever

The second stop on this sandwich journey to track down Grand Rapids’ biggest sandwiches was Matchbox Diner.  Matchbox took over the location previously occupied by Brandywine, a restaurant primarily known for its breakfast. Matchbox still offers an incredible breakfast lineup (in fact I highly recommend trying their build your own benny if for some odd reason you aren’t in the mood for a sandwich) but their new menu also offers “Stick to your bones” comfort food and if you haven’t checked out their mile-high deli-style sandwiches they are offering you are really missing out.

The sandwich featured here is called the “Joe Madden” and is piled high with extremely generous portions of thinly shaved, melt in your mouth, pastrami, corned beef, and turkey.  They top this mountain of meat off with melted Swiss cheese and deli mustard creating an unbelievably delicious sandwich.

SANDWICH PROTIP: If you aren’t up for the full sandwich for some reason the half sandwich option they offer is a legitimate alternative. Many other deli style restaurants will just cut the meat in half when a half sandwich is ordered but Matchbox offers a true half sandwich option which is still stacked a mile high with deliciousness.  Also… get their American fries whenever you get a chance. They’re top notch.

Next up on this giant sandwich tour is a club sandwich inspired option from Charlie’s Bar and Grill over on Plainfield Ave. This bad boy is made up of three giant slices of Schnitz bakery sourdough bread and is packed with American and Swiss cheeses, a whole bunch of ham, turkey and bacon, and finished off with some lettuce, tomato and good ole American mayonnaise making for quite the hefty sammich.  

As you can see, it takes up darn near a whole plate!

No giant sandwich article would be complete without the inclusion of a massive cheeseburger.  My original quest was to seek out the largest burger patty GR had to offer but just could not find a single patty burger impressive enough for this article.  

What did impress me, however, was the massive burger creation the fine folks over at Jonny B’z whipped up for me. If you want to order this tower of a sandwich yourself you’ll need to order their bacon cheeseburger with two extra patties and top it with a slider just for good measure.  At the very reasonable price of $1.75 per extra patty, you have the option to create infinitely massive burgers any time you visit. According to the general manager, the all-time record for most patties on a single burger is twelve.

Now that’s a giant sandwich!

SANDWICH PROTIP:  My favorite thing about Jonny B’z is how open to customer customizations they are.  Besides extra patties, you can add pretty much anything they have on hand to any sandwich you order so the options really are limitless here.  It’s also worth mentioning that their new(ish) location now offers BBQ and a full bar.

Up next we have a Reuben inspired sandwich from one of Grand Rapids best delis – The Schnitz Deli on Fulton Street.  The sandwich featured here is the #17 – Evan’s Double Dip and is not only their largest sandwich on the menu but also my favorite sandwich on the menu. What a coincidence.

This delightful creation takes a couple classic Reuben recipes and combines them into one massive sandwich   Evan’s double dip contains generous portions of corned beef AND pastrami, coleslaw, AND sauerkraut, swiss cheese, 1,000 island dressing all on rye bread. If you are a fan of Rubens you will absolutely love this sandwich.

Our final stop, on what I hope has been a magical journey down GIANT sandwich lane for all you sandwich lovers out there, is none other than Founders Deli. This beauty here has a little bit of everything. Their impressive list of ingredients touts  Pastrami, Roast Beef, Roasted Chicken, Colby Jack & Pepper Jack cheeses, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Red Onions, Baby Spinach, Red Peppers, Jalapeños, Banana Peppers, Avocado & Chipotle Mayo all packed between slices of San Francisco Sourdough, Polish Rye & Multigrain Wheat.  

Wow! That is a lot of things. However, the end product is a very flavorful and surprisingly spicy sandwich that not all could down in one sitting.

So there you have it, folks! Time to get out there and try some of these giant sandwiches for yourself.
