NEW SEASON: Mayor’s Book Club for Kids

NEW SEASON: Mayor’s Book Club for Kids

The Mayor’s Book Club for Kids helps to instill a love of reading and books in children 8 and under. Each month, the Mayor of Grand Rapids, George Heartwell, visits a different elementary school, daycare or preschool and reads a book to a class. The class receives a copy of the book, and each student gets a reading guide and a special souvenir photo.

All kids in Grand Rapids can read along with the Mayor by signing up for the Mayor’s Book Club at They can visit the nearest Grand Rapids Public Library and check out any of the featured books. Participants who read all 12 of the Mayor’s Book Club books will receive a special prize. Kids can sign up anytime.

The Mayor’s Book Club for Kids was developed in response to a call to action from Mayor Heartwell to reduce illiteracy in our community by 50% in the next decade. Research has shown that engaging young children in reading is vital to breaking the cycle of illiteracy.

The Mayor’s Book Club for Kids kicks off with a reading rally at the Yankee Clipper Branch Library on August 13, 2013 at 10:30 am. The Mayor will read ‘The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore’ by William Joyce and children will have an opportunity to make their own READ poster and enjoy refreshments and other fun activities. This event is free and open to the public.

The Grand Rapids Public Library connects people to the transforming power of knowledge.
