More than 40 years ago, Peter and Maria Christopoulos took a former Dog ‘N Suds hot dog and burger stand and converted it into a family-oriented restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. That first location has now expanded to a chain of six across West Michigan, but that original Mr. Burger still makes the case for serving up some of the best burgers, fries and pie around.
Walking into Mr. Burger is like taking a bit of a step back in time. The decor is reminiscent of the 80’s, and after taking a look at the vintage menu, pick up your tray and place your order with the cook. Along the way to the cash register, you can choose jello, desserts and other goodies from the refrigerated case. (Yes, each item is covered in saran wrap, but don’t worry, the food is way better than anything ever served up at your high school cafeteria).
All the classics are served here: pancakes, bacon and eggs at breakfast; burgers, grilled cheese and onion rings at lunch; chopped sirloin, fried chicken and fish fry at dinner. A couple items like the gyro and chicken pita reflect the Greek heritage of the owners. The fresh-baked pies are a must, especially the cherry, chocolate cream and strawberry versions. The prices won’t cause you to go broke either; not much on the menu is more than $7, including the dinner entrees.
But, as the name implies, the burgers are the heroes. The signature one has just beef, special sauce, lettuce and cheese, and you can also double the meat. Burger connoisseurs can also choose from a bacon deluxe, a triple or the olive version.
From humble beginnings at one restaurant to six in the metro area, Mr. Burger has certainly grown over the years. But what hasn’t changed is that the diner can still make a claim for having some of the best hamburgers around.
