The level, quality and availability of sushi in Grand Rapids has truly exploded over the past decade, with new favorites like Maru, Ju and Sushi Kuni having arrived on the scene in just the last couple of years. But even with all of the new competition, there’s one place that still stands out above the crowd: Tokyo Grill.
Located at the corner of 44th Street SE and Breton Road in a nondescript shopping center that’s seen better days and more tenants, Tokyo Grill serves up the freshest sushi and best tempura batter around in a well-kept interior that boasts a friendly atmosphere.
The selection of maki rolls is impressive, ranging from the spicy conch roll (with diced conch!) to the Mac & Cheese (soft shell crab and eel with mayo) and the Kosher (salmon, cream cheese & scallions). Tokyo Grill also has off-the-menu rolls that they’ll make special; give the Mulligan Maki a shot, if you like spicy. Sushi-lovers can also indulge in small, medium or large orders of sashimi (raw fish with no rice) and sushi-newbies can try basic rolls like California and cucumber off of the Beginner Menu.
What makes Tokyo Grill truly great, though, is that it’s not just a one-trick pony serving up the freshest sushi; it’s the balance and quality of the rest of the menu, especially for the price. The homemade onion salad dressing is worth the trip alone and for those who like their proteins cooked, the scallop and beef hibachi dinners are wonderful (and less than $10!). You also can’t go wrong with the soft shell crab tempura or any of the udon noodle entrees. They have teriyaki and beef short ribs, too. And if you still can’t get enough deep fried goodness, the dessert menu features tempura ice cream.
The next time you’re looking to satisfy the urge to put yourself in a sushi coma, head to Tokyo Grill.
