Looking to spend a day in the Grand Haven area during the fall or winter? We’ve spotlighted some of our favorite things to do in Coast Guard City. Mix-and-match the suggested restaurants, parks, museums, and shopping to create an adventure all your own.

Why not start off with a great breakfast at the Morning Star Cafe? Serving up a variety of American and Southwestern dishes, this vegetarian friendly eatery is sure to have something for everyone. The Bakers Wife is an another great place for a quick breakfast pitstop or sweet tooth fix; offering delectable pastries and desserts. Rainy Days Café is a cute mom and pop breakfast stop with generous portions of American fare.

Next, culture buffs will want to head over to a local museum. Tri-Cities Historical Museum’s educational exhibits on Native Americans and early pioneers are sure to interest history lovers. The museum even offers ‘Music at the Museum’ where you can listen live bands like The Crane Wives and The Accidentals. Check out the museums website for dates and times.

Now it’s time to get away from the hustle bustle and become one with nature. For that, Grand Haven has a number of biking and hiking trails that run over dunes, along rivers, through forests and offer awe inspiring views of Lake Michigan. Hiking trails include the North Ottawa Dunes and Rosy Mound Natural Area. Bikers may enjoy a ride along the 20 mile bike trail that runs from downtown Grand Haven and Holland.

If you’re looking for some hardcore fall and winter fun, there are plenty of activities for you to enjoy. Mulligan’s Hollow has 8 downhill runs that are great for skiing or snowboarding. Harbor Island is ideal for a quick snowkiting session. You can sled, ski or snowshoe at Pigeon Creek Park

If you’re like us, at this point you’re probably thinking ‘it’s time to get my shop on’…and maybe pick up some lunch while I’m at it! Downtown Grand Haven is a great place to pack in both of these activities. Get a jump on your holiday shopping with unique items from the various specialty stores like Blueberry Haven or Purple Rose Boutique. For lunch, try one of the 26 eateries in area including burger joints, oyster bars, seafood, sushi restaurants.

By now, that late afternoon darkness is surely starting to fall and it’s time to start thinking about some nighttime fun. Why not start the evening out by catching that new movie you wanted to see at the Grand Haven 9? With a variety of the latest movies, the theater is sure to be featuring something that will be fun for the whole family or suitable for that romantic date.

Next, on to a quick pre dinner drink at one of the area’s fine breweries. There are many choices for grabbing your favorite variety of craft beers. Grand Armory Brewing, Hawk Peak Brewing and Odd Side Ales are all great options. For dinner, try fun local dishes like the Trumpet Pasta with Crab & Lemon Grassat the Paisley Pig Gastropub, or make it an elegant night out with upscale seafood at Snug Harbor.

Now it’s time to dance the night away or partake in a casual night cap.  The Dark Room at the Kirby, a Gilmore Collection venue, is Grand Haven’s nightclub. With a upscale atmosphere complete with a DJ, VIP area, and classic cocktails, this is a place you can dress up and enjoy 80’s and 90’s music. But a nightclub might not be for everyone. If you’d rather enjoy an after dark drink without all the big crowds make your way to Hiway Inn for a low key beverage. Both The Kirby and Hiway Inn are open until 2am.

And after all that, we suppose the only thing left to do is get some much needed sleep…but before you do, check out other fun things to do in Grand Haven by researching Visit Grand Haven online.
