Van Andel Arena is in the heart of Grand Rapids and a terrific venue for major concerts and sporting events. Now there will be even more to look forward to when you visit the arena for an event. Plans are in the works for an exterior facelift to make the location more modern and practical.
The project will include an addition of trees, grass and more seating options for a more piazza-like setting. The hope is that the updates will help the overall area to become more welcoming to visitors. It may also serve as a café setting for some of the eateries nearby, allowing locals and guests to enjoy the amenities.
On the practical side, the addition of the greenery will work as a barrier to protect the building from potential traffic hazards and other activity. It will also separate the exterior from the alleys between businesses where refuse is collected.
The project is estimated to cost close to $1 million – an expense that will be split between the DGRI which collects a portion of taxes from downtown businesses for improvements, and the CAA which is funded through the country hotel/motel tax.
Final plans for the project are expected to be announced in August. From there, it is estimated to take about a year to complete. The finished product is sure to beautify the city and give locals and tourists even more to look forward to when visiting Van Andel Arena.
