GRNow Distillery Guide

We all know Grand Rapids is Beer City USA, but there’s a new beverage of choice on the rise. Craft spirits are giving Grand Rapids more attention and several new distilleries have popped up over the past few years. Not only are these distilleries producing award-winning spirits, they’re also serving up some of the best food in the area. West Michigan is currently home to six distilleries. Here’s a closer look at the distilleries paving the way for craft cocktails here in West Michigan.

Artesian Distillers

Opening in 2009, Artesian Distillers has been serving high-quality spirits in both Rockford and Grand Rapids. Their two tasting rooms have a wide selection of prohibition themed cocktails. Check out their Hemingway Lounge, which is located in the heart of downtown on Ionia street. Every Sunday from 11am-5pm, you can build your own Bloody Mary cocktail for $3 a piece!

Bier Distillery

Joel Bierling first started Bier Distillery in 2014 inside Cellar Brewing in Sparta. He has since relocated to West River Drive, about 1.5 miles away from Fifth Third Ballpark. Bier Distillery is producing delicious twists on spirits like their Spunkin Punkin which is distilled from a single malt, barley and then redistilled with pumpkin and spices. Not to mention, their Absinthe, yes Absinthe, is the first to be produced in West Michigan.

Coppercraft Distillery

Located in Holland, Coppercraft recently reopened its renovated tasting room complete with a new kitchen. Coppercraft currently has 11 delicious spirits in their arsenal. Look for live music every Thursday nights and a rotating seasonal menu led by the extremely talented Chef Kelsey Winter-Troutwine. If all that wasn’t exciting enough, now you can catch great happy hour specials from 4-6pm Tuesday through Friday. This entails $2 off all cocktails and 15% off Snacks & For the Table menu items. Yum!

Grey Skies Distillery

Off the beaten path on the outskirts of downtown Grand Rapids sits Grey Skies Distillery. Their distillery is home to minimalist vibes and high-quality cocktails. Grey Skies is strictly in the cocktail game, but they often recruit local food trucks to hang out in their parking lot for hungry patrons. Pick up their spirits on-site, at your local liquor store, or even in the grocery store. Rumor has it that Gray Skies has a Straight Michigan Bourbon aging as we speak, stay tuned over the next few years, you won’t want to miss it!

New Holland Artisan Spirits

From Holland to Grand Rapids, New Holland has been leaving their mark on both the craft beer and spirit game. Officially entering the spirit world in 2005, New Holland has been going strong for over a decade now. Their love for both craft beer and spirits is evident in their Beer Barrel Bourbon, which is Bourbon whiskey finished in oak beer barrels. Partnering with Michigan Awesome, they have also created a smooth vodka. You can try their spirits in both Holland and Grand Rapids locations.

Long Road Distillers

With multiple award-winning spirits and a recent kitchen expansion, it’s hard to not take notice of the West Side distillery. Long Road has also made headlines with Michigin, the first completely made in Michigan Gin. Their Wendy Peppercorn spirit is one that is known across the state and even across the country. Try good ole Wendy Peppercorn as a mimosa during their brunch hours. With a recent completion of The Rickhouse, a large upstairs event space, Long Road has been hosting many cocktail themed events and local bands.
