Public Museum Opens New GR History Exhibit E-mail
A special ethnic festival January 19 will kick off the opening of the Grand Rapids Public Museum's new permanent exhibit "Newcomers: The People of This Place". Seven years in the making, the exhibit will tell the story of Grand Rapids through the immigration journeys and personal affects of forty ethnic groups who settled here.

Camper, Travel & RV Show Opens Jan 17 E-mail
If you’re in the market for a trailer, motor home, or for a place to people-watch, head downtown to DeVos Place this weekend for the 2008 Grand Rapids Camper, Travel & RV Show. The largest such show in the state will have a dozen West Michigan RV dealers displaying more than 125 RVs ready for inspection. Travel trailers, fifth wheels, truck campers, and folding camping trailers will also be exhibited.

New Bar in Town Not Like the Others E-mail

Small Town Band Meets Big Time Success E-mail
A couple weeks ago, I wrote a piece on a documentary featuring Grand Rapids restaurant Yesterdog. In the article I quoted founder Bill Evans as saying, “Don’t worry about getting a lot of variety. Just find your niche and do it well.” Three weeks later I found myself interviewing a band that has taken that Midwest philosophy to heart--and on the road. They don’t bother themselves with the latest trend or popular sound. They found their niche, and they do it well. That is for sure.

Bar Scene Remains Unchanged (Meanwhile….) E-mail
Here is my usual experience when I go “out to the bar”: I pay too much for bad drinks, there is nowhere to sit, and I am assaulted with bad music, neon beer signs, and several football games I don’t care about.

Here is my experience with a new bar in town: I buy a couple of delicious Michigan beers for my wife and me at a reasonable price. Eclectic music fits nicely into the background while we have a chat with some friends. I’m talking about The Meanwhile Bar on the corner of Wealthy and Diamond.
