GRNow Weekend Guide October 21-23, 2011 E-mail
As Halloween draws closer, the spooky (and not so spooky!) autumn activities continue to ramp up with The Zoo Goes Boo, the annual Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival, the new downtown Rockford Zombie Walk and the 1970s zombie-prom themed Haunted Hall Bash in Casnovia.

Friday (10/21)

Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival - West Michigan's film festival celebrating genre movies returns for three days to the Wealthy Theatre, October 21-23. Dozens of full-length films, shorts and cult classics will be shown. All-access weekend festival passes are $30.

The Mane Event - Formerly the Hair Ball, the hair competition has moved inside The B.O.B. from Crush to Eve for 2011. See local stylists of all levels show off their skill and creativity while the audience votes for their favorites. Proceeds from the $5 cover charge benefit Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

The Zoo Goes Boo! - Celebrate Halloween at John Ball Zoo October 21, 22, 28 & 29 with trick-or-treating on the 'Kooky Not Spooky Trail', live entertainment, a giant straw maze, make-n-take crafts and more. Admission is $3.50 for adults and $3 for kids.

Mendelssohn Violin Concerto - Renowned violinist Augustin Hadelich joins the Grand Rapids Symphony and special guest conductor Jose Luis Gomez to perform a fresh take on the best of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. Tickets start at $18.

Witch's Walk Haunted Corn Maze - Walk this haunted corn maze near 6 Mile Rd & Fruit Ridge NW, if you dare! The backstory: when clearing a field to plant corn, a farmer came across an old cemetery and accidentally disturbed some unmarked graves. Since then, strange sounds have been coming from the field and former graveyard. The Witch's Walk is a half mile of twists and turns over this disturbed burial ground. Ticket prices are $10 for evenings, $5 during the day. Online coupons are available.
