It's a busy August weekend around GR with The Music of Michael Jackson at Picnic Pops, Coast Guard Festival, the Grandwich final judging and concerts by Josh Groban, Yung Joc, Bela Fleck and Bruce Hornsby.
The Music of Michael Jackson - Singer/Dancer James Delisco, winner of E! Network's reality series "The Entertainer," joins the Grand Rapids Symphony Picnic Pops to perform authentic recreations of The King of Pop's megahits like 'Thriller' and 'Man in the Mirror'. Tickets are $22 in advance, $24 at the gate.
Yung Joc - 'It's Goin' Down' Atlanta rapper Yung Joc takes the stage at The Orbit Room at 8 p.m.; tickets are $40.
Bela Fleck/Bruce Hornsby - Musician Bela Fleck returns to the Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater, this time with special guest Bruce Hornsby.
GR Photo Project - You have the chance to be in ArtPrize this year as part of the collaborative entry called 'GR Photo Project'. Locate stencils on the ground in front of landmarks like Calder Plaza, take a photo, upload it to grphotoproject.com and the artists will hang it in the windows of Van Andel Arena.
All Friday Events
Coast Guard Festival - Grand Haven's largest annual event attracts 350,000 people annually to the lakeshore to pay tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard. Enjoy ten days of ship tours, parades, fireworks, live music, a carnival midway, shopping, food, a kids day and street dance. Free general admission. Saturday features the Meijer Parade during the day and fireworks over the harbor at night.
GR Big Latch On - At 10:30 a.m., nursing mothers across the country will gather to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and try to break the record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously. Locally, moms will nurse together at Rosa Parks Circle, with registration beginning at 10 a.m.
Josh Groban - The multi-platinum recording artist brings his 'Straight To You' World Tour to Van Andel Arena, during which he'll perform songs from best-selling albums like 'You Raise Me Up' and take requests from the audience. Tickets start at $45.
24 Hour Musical - Local writers, directors, actors and musicians will work together August 6 to create original one-act musicals that must be written and performed within a 24-hour period. The community is invited to be part of the audience to see the final products.
Grandwich Judging - The Grandwich contest culminates in this final judging event at Rosa Parks Circle at 1 p.m. Top 10 finalists include Hopcat, Grand Central Market, the Green Well and The Omelette Shop. Free to attend.
Red Barns Spectacular - Hundreds of antique, classic and special interest vehicles will be on display at the Gilmore Car Museum for the "Grand Daddy" of car shows in West Michigan. Find collector automobiles for sale, campers & RVs, classic boats, bicycles, car parts, tools, literature, pretty much anything related to vehicles. $9 admission includes access to all museum exhibits (kids under 11 are free).
All Saturday Events
Whitecaps - It's Family Day at Fifth Third Ballpark, plus WGRD will host the World's Largest Dog Wash and Ferris State University will giveaway bandanas to the first 1,000 dogs. Tickets start at $6.
Newaygo County Fair - In operation for more than 50 years, the fair and livestock show on M-82 has a petting farm, sheep shearing demonstrations, vendor tents, food, rides, a demolition derby, burn out contests, the 'Farm Olympics' and more. General admission is free; parking is $3.
