|Put the Funk in Your Junk This Summer|
by Chelsea Slocum
Watch out, Cecily Near is bringing the funk to your junk this summer. Funky Junk Flea is back for its 2nd year giving West Michigan its summer vintage fix. Located at 455 Century Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids, Funky Junk Flea is a weekly vintage flea market open from 2pm-8pm every Thursday over the summer months. “We are bringing affordable vintage to West Michigan,” says Cecily Near, founder and creator of Funky Junk Flea. “At Funky Junk you will find one of a kind vintage items at garage sale prices, our vendors range from professional antique dealers looking to off load some inventory to thrift enthusiasts who sell vintage as a hobby.”
Cecily is no stranger to the antique world; this queen of vintage has produced the Grand Rapids Antiques Market at DeVos Place for the last seven years. It has grown to become the largest indoor antique market in Michigan. She also coordinates the Rotary East Antique Show in November at the Delta Plex. “There really wasn’t an outlet for outdoor vintage shopping in West Michigan over the summer,” says Cecily, “I decided to go for it last year and opened up Funky Junk, people loved it! We have expanded our vendors this year, developed a logo, and published a website to draw more consumers to the market.”
Funky Junk doesn’t stand alone. Victoria’s Warehouse, Lost and Found Antiques, and Century Antiques are located on Century Avenue as well. “It has been great to collaborate with the local antique shops, we are bringing increased traffic to the area on Thursday evenings and they are providing our customers with a huge variety of vintage selections,” says Cecily.
Funky Junk is also bringing the fun with planned theme nights throughout the summer. The first is tomorrow, June 7, starting at 2 pm with a popsicle party in honor of opening night. There will be free popsicles for all shoppers, Victoria’s Warehouse is grilling hot dogs, and Lost and Found Antiques is serving sangria. Other planned theme nights include a vintage trailer night, bicycle night, and vinyl record night. One of Grand Rapid’s most popular food trucks, The Silver Spork will also be present every Thursday evening serving up local gourmet food on the go. Weather dependent, Cecily expects to have between 12 and 30 vendors every Thursday evening, so come after work, grab some grub, and see what Funky Junk Flea has in store for you.
