With less than two weeks to go until Christmas, there are some great ways to celebrate the holiday this weekend, including the GR Ballet's 'The Nutcracker', Breakfast with Santa, ice skating at Rosa Parks Circle, the Whoville 5K and the final weekend of 'A Christmas Carol'.
The Nutcracker - For more than 3 decades, the Grand Rapids Ballet Company has brought the Christmas classic to life with dazzling choreography, sets and costumes, along with 100 dancers, including children and celebrities from the community. The Ballet returns to DeVos Performance Hall accompanied by the Grand Rapids Symphony. Tickets: $20+.
Grand Rapids Griffins - The Griffins host the Peoria Rivermen at Van Andel Arena, where it will once again be Dollar Beers, Dollar Dogs night, as well as College and Military Night.
The Musical Box - The Orbit Room hosts the Exclusive recreation of Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", authorized by Peter Gabriel. Tickets range from $23.50 to $38.50.
Ice Skating at Rosa Parks Circle - The skating rink at Rosa Parks Circle is now open; hours for the weekend are noon to 10 p.m. on Friday & Saturday and noon to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $1 and skate rental is free with ID.
Mega 80's - One of Michigan's favorite 80's cover bands is back at The Intersection. Tickets are $10; ages 21+ welcome.
All Friday Events
Breakfast with Santa at the Kroc - Enjoy breakfast with the jolly guy at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc on South Division. The family event will feature a candy cane scavenger hunt, storybook reading, crafts, photos with Santa and the breakfast buffet. Cost is $5 per person.
A Christmas Carol - For the final weekend of the run the GR Civic Theatre presents the timeless Charles Dickens classic that makes its West Michigan premiere after ten years at Madison Square Garden. Tickets are $18-$34.
Gaither Homecoming Christmas Special - Multi Grammy Award-winning singer Bill Gaither will present the holiday music spectacular at Van Andel Arena at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $29.50.
All Saturday Events
The Whoville 5K - Back for a second year at Riverside Park, the Dr. Seuss-inspired 5K includes a run, a walk, kids fun run and the sweet finish in Whoville, complete with a chocolate fountain.
Clara's Nutcracker Party - The popular annual family event hosted by the Grand Rapids Ballet Company features brunch, photos with Clara and other characters from the production, a reading of The Nutcracker and more before 2 p.m. performance on December 16.
Edelweiss Christmas Concert - The Edelweiss Choir performs their annual holiday concert with German and Austrian Christmas music, authentic costumes and traditional carols at St. Mary's on First St NW.
