Guide to Monroe Ave N & Belknap

The energy behind downtown's rebirth isn't just limited to the heart of the city; it's also beginning to make its way into the Belknap-Monroe area located just to the north. Bordered by the Grand River to the west, Leonard Street on the north and College and Crescent to east and south, the neighborhood is home to three unique sections.

The Monroe Avenue corridor along the Grand is highlighted by large factories and warehouses, such as the multi-story Boardwalk and Brassworks buildings, that have been converted into condos, offices, apartments and art galleries. Mirroring the river, the well-kept Canal and Sixth Street Bridge parks both offer scenic views of the downtown skyline, as well as Michigan's oldest metal truss bridge on Sixth Street.

The intersection of Michigan St and Lafayette has become the center of Grand Rapids' biotech and medical research facilities, sometimes referred to as "Pill Hill". With Spectrum Health, the Van Andel Institute and the opening of Michigan State's medical school leading the way, the area expects to add nearly $600m in development by 2010.

Situated on a bluff overlooking the city, the Belknap Lookout neighborhood features a number of historical homes and parks, including Belknap Memorial Park, the site of the large-scale environment artwork, Grand Rapids Project X.
