Bad service, bad nan!
Reviewed by Janet, 2009-07-01 01:38:11

I went there for my birthday today...and I've been to other Indian Restaurants, this one had a good entree. The appetizer was to greasy, the nan...I'm so upset about the nan. We got the garlic and adore anything with garlic...it was unbearable! I could see the garlic pieces on the nan! I have never been to a restaurant where they wait to take your order until they bring your appetizer! The service was horrible, these girls just wait in the back as long as they possibly could and weren't very attentive. I would not recommend going there. And way wayyy over priced.

Very Greedy

I just left there. It cost me $42.00 for 2 dishes plus one order of bread. They even had the AUDACITY to asks for tips on take-out orders. Good food but way too expensive.

Good eats but not a great value anymore

I've been going to Bombay for years. This is the first time I've been there since they renovated and it looks great, although it lost it's former local charm. It used to be a good value where I would meet friends a couple of times a month for a pint and a meal or hit the buffet for lunch. The food is still good, but prices have gone up putting it into the category of occasional (1-2 times per year) treat. Dinner for two, with drinks and dessert was over $70 including tip, which is awfully steep for GR. The staff was friendly and attentive, but the restaurant was also maybe only 1/4 full on a Thursday night so I'm not sure how it would be if it was actually busy. The main courses are plenty of food, but they do nickle and dime you for bread and rice. The rice comes in a tiny little container, which is pretty outrageous considering it costs extra on top of your meal. I wouldn't consider the average entree price of around $16 expensive if it came with free rice and at least one basket bread. Seems like a cheap way they could turn around the common perception that it's gotten expensive. For a special occasion, it's worth it, but I'll be going probably 20 fewer times per year than I used to.

Too Expensive!

Just too darn expensive.... and Nan apparently not homemade :( (it's frozen)

Where did you go?

Used to be my favorite in GR. Lost the trendy local feel. Raised it's prices...sized down on the portions. Took away the BOGO beer deal. Seriously. Where did you go?

My experience with Bombay has been widely varied. On the whole, the service has generally been pretty good, with a lot of the waitstaff being very friendly, fun and personable. However, there have been some souring incidents as well. Its hard to know what to expect given the high staff turnover rate. We once came with a large group of perhaps 8-10 people for appetizers and beer one night, and our waitress who was extremely rude from the get-go had kept our tab on one bill without asking. When it came time to pay, she told us it was impossible to split the bill individually, and that their system didn't allow it. None of us had cash, or really had any idea of what we individually owed. The waitress became indignant as we explained the situation and told us there was nothing she could do. We finally asked to speak to a manager, and the manager explained that it was 'difficult' to seperate the bill. In other words, she didn't want to do the work, after she should have asked if we were paying seperately in the beginning, and then lying about not being able to split the bill. In the end, the manager resolved the situation but was even quite rude to us. Classy, considering it was my friend's mother (who is very polite) handling the situation.

I will say, as far as Indian food goes, what I have tried on the menu has been quite authentic (my family has quite a few Indian friends who have cooked for us on occasion) and rather good. I will however agree with everyone else's assesment of the price. The Nan is incredibly overpriced, and most appetizers are very small and *start* at $7. Entrees start around $10. The fact they charge $3 for an additional serving of rice is ridiculous.

If you want to save a little money, my recommendation would be to go on a Sunday for the buffet. The food selection is good and they do change it a bit every so often, and its usually dishes that most everyone will enjoy. The cost is around $12/person, which is good considering its hard to get a single entree for that on the dinner menu, and this is all-you-can-eat which allows you to try a sampling of a wider variety of items. Total bill for myself and my girlfriend on a Sunday is around $27 usually, not too bad--and you don't have to worry about getting a potentially rude waiter or waitress!

Nickle and Dime You to Death

This used to be one of our favorite places to go and the truth is the food is great. However, the prices are ridiculous. It costs me $50.00 with no alcohol for dinner my 10 year old son and me. They charge $3.50 for a single piece of Nan (cut into 4 quarters). Rice beyond your first serving is a couple more dollars. Since building the addition, service has hit an all time low starting with the management. Even with the prices, we continued to eat there a couple times a week. On one occasion, I asked if my 10 year old could get a half order of the $16.00 dish that he typically gets because he was not that hungry. They flat out refused even though we come twice a week! For a small side of additional sauce, they tack on a few more dollars to the bill. Ownership needs to take a serious look at service and charging practices. As much as we love the food, we are going to actively seek an alternative Indian dining experience!

Connoisseur of good food

Sometimes daylight robbery comes in the form of a confused cook dishing out trash to dining tables of unsuspecting diners.

Vegetable Korma - Was a gooey pish pash with two grapes on top. $13.
Shrimp Vindaloo - 5 pieces of Shrimp with tasteless potatoes in red muck - $16
Bhuna (Butter Chicken - like) - Tomato paste and butter blend - It is supposed to be a gravy, instead it was a chutney-ish - $16
Channa Masala - Boiled Channa and treacherously mixed (supposed to be cooked) with a load of red chilly powder (Yes, we wanted spicy, but we did not ask for raw chilly powder). $12
Parathas - I don't know whether they know what Parathas are - $2.50 each
Masala Kulchas were ok - $4 each
Stuffed Kulchas were tasteles - $4 each

Note: Prices are approximate and I am quoting from memory.

Most importantly, they should remove the "Fine dining" tag. If they need a lesson on "Fine dining" we would gladly show what it is. We would do it free of cost.

They should also remove the tag "Indian food" for it is not. It is some crazy concoction of some unqualified chef's kitchen dream.

The waiters and waitresses were polite, but they don't have a clue on what the food should be like. We sincerely pity them to front such bad fare. We wanted to speak to the manager or the host. No one was available. Still one waitress had the grit to save face by saying "We havent heard such comments before". It looks like a Bistro is being converted into a Dhaba. May be it is. Some old stock wines are being sold too.

Damage: $100

On the decline

I used to love Bombay, but things are changing there it seems. For some reason, prices have gone up while quality has gone down. It's too expensive for me to take my family of four - and even the kids have noticed it isn't as good any more. Not a lot of Indian options, so we may still go occassionally. But certainly not on top of our list any more.

Good food but!!

This definitely used to be the place to go for Indian food but realizing that, it appears that the price has gone up and the size of the entres have gone down. Dinner for two with one appetizer shouldnt cost 60 bucks with no alcoholic beverages.

Nevertheless the food is great and there is no competition so we will continue to go there....
