Rubbish!
Reviewed by Lee, 2009-08-16 20:45:34

Like most, possibly every supposedly Japanese restaurant in Grand Rapids Tokyo Grill is clearly a Korean owned, Korean operated establishment. I spent years in both Japan and Korea and this place should clearly be called "Seoul Grill."
The sushi is the same as any other place in Grand Rapids, the quality of the fish is slightly lower which can be expected since there are no oceans near Michigan. The problem lies with the other "Japanese" food. Miso that tastes like it's made from a packet bought from a market, Katsu-don with soggy tonkatsu and for some reason there's kimchi on the overpriced menu.
If the price was roughly half of what it is now, and there were substantive changes to the cooking I might be able to call it Japanese food. Japanese food is about subtlety. Korean food is about power and blunt force culinary trauma. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Korean food but not when you call it "Japanese."

Best Japanese in town

I first visited Tokyo Grill about a year ago and have since been going about every 2cnd or 3rd week. The service is always excellent as is the food. We have tried most of the items on the menu and all of it has been very good. The sushi is always great, and the Udon soups are also fantastic. for a less adventurous eater I would highly recommend the tempura or hibachi. To top it all off all of the food is very reasonably priced. If you do go, I would recommend calling ahead and asking if you can reserve a space in one of the private Tatami rooms, as eating in there adds quite a bit to the experience.

I've been going to Tokyo Grill for about 15 yrs now. Since then, it has expanded (from a tiny sushiya) to 2 or 3 times the size, with private tatami rooms. The food is always excellent and arrives quickly. Gochisosama deshita, Tokyo Grill!

I highly recommend their a la carte salmon--it's always fresh and and delicious. Futomaki, tempura, and unagi are also my favorites. YUM!

This is where I had my first sushi, and even though I have traveled many places the Sushi Shawn makes is the best! Beautiful setting too. Try the beer and the edamami for starters, and the Spider maki is to die for! For the real sushi lovers the sashimi is fresh and wonderful. For a different treat have the Mori soba, great cool dish for a hot summer day!

Tokyo Grill has maintained their standard for years pairiing it with other good Japanese restaurants in larger cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. We have always enjoyed their sushi, tempura and pretty much everything in their menu.
