20 {Last Minute} Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day may look a little different this year, but showing appreciation for the women in your life — mom, stepmom, grandma, the woman who raised you, or the mentor who held a special, nurturing role in your upbringing — is as important as ever. Let them know their impact on you, however you can say it: whether social distancing or quarantining under the same roof — and every text, drive-by or Zoom session scenario in between.

Here are some ways to share some love and to support local businesses, while you’re at it:

Self-Care

If one thing’s for sure, moms give more than they could ever receive in return. Help show mom that it’s as important to take care of herself as it is for her to take care of others, reminding her she can’t pour from an empty cup by filling hers this holiday — and giving her gifts that help her treat herself with all the love she deserves year-round.

Chasing Vanity Salon is offering a Mother’s Day Black Box. Choose from two black box options for the ultimate self-care gift for mom, featuring Madcap coffee, spa-related goodies, and Mokaya chocolate truffles, among other fun items. The deadline for delivered orders is Monday, May 4, and for pickup orders is Wednesday, May 6.

Food + Beverage

Good food is a surefire way to add heart and soul to any celebration — and Mother’s Day is no exception. Grand Rapids has a plethora of restaurants offering food for the occasion. Show you care by making sure mom doesn’t have to lift a finger in the kitchen this Sunday, with the following specials:

Pack Elephant offers gift boxes full of goodies from small businesses owned and operated in Grand Rapids. The Wakanda Mother’s Day box comes with juice from Malamiah Juice Bar, cookies from Daddy’s Dough, popcorn from Mosby’s Popcorn, and more! Boxes also come with the option to add a handwritten note, for an extra sweet touch.

The Mitten Brewing Co. is taking phone orders (and payments) on Sundays from 2-9pm, which you can pick up in their parking lot. Their pizza and craft beer are some of the best in town, and a portion of every purchase goes back to the West Side community.

Grand Rapids native, Steve Brechting (aka Chef Brech), is offering dinner for four for Mother’s Day, including side dishes and dessert! On his catering website, you can choose between pickup and delivery between noon and 3pm on Sunday, May 10.

The Green Well Gastro Pub can attest that mom knows best—and if there’s one thing she certainly knows best, it’s her love for The Green Well! Show her your love and appreciation for this Mother’s Day with a delish carryout meal to go. Order a Mother’s Day meal for two or four people, which comes with pot roast, salad, rosemary roasted potatoes, cold grain salad, and more. You can even add on a wine bundle or fresh tulips! Place your order by Friday, May 8th at 4pm and schedule your pick-up for Sunday, May 10 between 12pm and 4pm.

Rockford Cheese Shop is keeping things cheesy, as any mom can appreciate — and not just for the family photo op (via zoom). Their package includes your choice of wine, three cheeses, crackers, Marcona almonds and chocolate. If your mom doesn’t like wine, they can substitute with an American Spoon product or honey butter. Curbside pick-up or delivery on Sunday, May 10, available within 15 miles of the shop. ($5-10 fee).

If cosmos, martinis and cranberry cocktails are more your mom’s thing, check out Motu Viget Spirits Avani Supreme Vodka. They’ve even whipped up a contest to get the creativity flowing this Mother’s Day. 1) Share your best Avani Vodka cocktail recipe 2) Submit a photo or video in the Facebook event page, and 3) Come up with a clever name. You can purchase Motu Viget Spirits at the following retailers: Bridge Street Market, Smitty’s Specialty Beverage, Long Road Distillers, and Wealthy Market.

Photography

Giving the gift of capturing precious moments? Cue waterworks. Photography sessions are a great “buy now, redeem later” option that’s both thoughtful and timeless.

Mod Bettie says it well: “we know what mom wants this year: time with you.” Let her know her wish is your command with a gift certificate for a Mother’s Day Mom & Me photography session. Or, give her something to celebrate herself for all the roles she plays with a Mother’s Day Self Love empowerment session. Learn more about what they’re all about here

Retail Therapy

Just because we can’t physically shop in-store these days doesn’t mean we can’t get our favorite local frock online. Show mom you appreciate her sense of style every day of the year — and get her excited for a shopping spree for a future date (together, of course).

Michelle Krick Style is offering gift cards as a treat for moms who may not splurge on themselves otherwise. The gift that’s doubly thoughtful (by supporting local & making someone smile), each gift card recipient will enjoy a virtual styling session to spend now or to be redeemed when stores reopen. Virtual services include: Wardrobe analysis, wardrobe styling, closet editing, closet organization, curated shopping lists, and personal or online shopping.

Located on Cherry St., Lennon & Willow is an adorable shop offering a Mystery Bag in addition to gift cards this Mother’s Day. A $108 value for only $75, this unique combination of clothing and accessories is exclusive to this limited gift set. Snag it while you can!

Looking to put those retail dollars to good use for the environment and for mom? Grab a set of stainless steel drinking straws from The Original Tin Cup Co., with a local twist: Michigan Awesome Edition The Last Straw. A portion of the proceeds goes to The Alliance for The Great Lakes to help clean up plastics that pollute Michigan’s water.

Smarty Pants

For the bibliophiles out there, look no further. A nice, new book and a quiet reading nook may be exactly what your mom, grandma or stepmom may be needing to reset and unwind this springtime. Get her started:

Books & Mortar is doing direct-to-home delivery only for a $2 shipping fee. Our Mother’s Day suggestion? This inspiring read: Rad American Women A-Z by Kate Schatz (retail: $14.95).

Workin’ on Her Fitness

There’s nothing like a good sweat to give off good vibes (thanks, endorphins!). Show mom you value her strength this holiday — in more ways than one.

Studio Barre is hosting its first-ever virtual workshop on Saturday, May 9 at 10am! In honor of Mother’s Day, Nancie and Lindsey from Studio Barre James Island will be team-teaching a 75-minute arms and abs focused class. They put it best: “it’s going to be a MOTHER of a good time!” The workshop will be hosted live ONLY in its private Facebook group: free for virtual members, $10 for non-members who can register and pay here. Register by Friday, May 8 at 5pm to participate.
