Meet the student problem-solvers who are rethinking the way we produce and consume while helping power the economy of the future.

Wege Prize—an annual competition that ignites game-changing solutions for the future by inspiring college students around the world to collaborate across institutional, disciplinary, and cultural boundaries and create innovative ideas for a circular economy—has announced the five finalist teams that will compete for more than $30,000 USD in total cash prizes in the final phase of the 2020 competition.

Watch a livestream of the 2020 finalist teams — organized by KCAD’s Wege Center for Sustainable Design with the support of The Wege Foundation — as they present and defend their bold ideas in front of expert judges and both live and online audiences.

The event is free to view and open to anyone in the world via live stream on wegeprize.org starting at 10 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP via Eventbrite.

Wege Prize is a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based international design competition recognizing transdisciplinary efforts to solve systemic issues in ways that also help power a transition from our current linear economic model—in which we take, make, and dispose—to a circular economy that’s restorative and regenerative by design. The 2020 finalists are asking questions like:
• What if we could streamline and reduce pre-consumer food waste at a university level by offering to-go meal packages and on-campus composting?
• What if one of the world’s most invasive plants could help spell the end for single-use plastic cutlery?
• What if organic waste from urban restaurants and residences could give rural farmers access to affordable and environmentally friendly fertilizer?
• What if the cause of some of Ghana’s most pressing environmental and human health problems could become their solution instead?
• What if the threat climate change poses to Canada’s booming canola oil industry could be stopped by the very seeds the oil is made from?

Just visit the homepage of wegeprize.org at 10am EDT on May 29, 2020 to view the live stream.
