If you love to pass the time browsing shelf after shelf looking for old novels, magazines and manuscripts, then head no further to Eastown where Argos Book Shop and Redux Books have been selling used books for years.
Located just around the block from one another, each shop specializes in something a little different. A large portion of Argos is devoted to graphic novels, sci-fi and fantasy paperbacks, comic books (they have over 30,000!) and supplies. They also have an extensive collection of non-fiction works, especially in the areas of history, biography and religion, along with vintage Life magazines. Ephemera collectors can sort through vintage advertising booklets, leaflets and postcards. Teachers, educators and students can also benefit from a 10% discount on any used books.
The focus at Redux is more on hardcover fiction and paperback novels, rare and out-of-print antiquarian publications and books signed by authors. The shop owners also enjoy tracking down customers requests for hard-to-find pieces of literature. Redux also has a great selection of used books that were written about Grand Rapids or published here. Head down the creaky stairs for an entire basement of even more paperbacks, complete sets of books, periodicals and randomness.
Both shops will take your old books for cash or trade and if your home is filled to the brim, someone from Redux will even make house calls. If you can’t make the trip in person, each shop has much of their inventories listed on Amazon and Abebooks.com. Redux has nearly 80,000 listed on the latter site alone.
What makes these two shops great is the atmosphere; they’re both in old buildings with creaky floors where every room is jammed with books from floor to ceiling. It’s an atmosphere that just can’t be matched by the big box places.
