When Checkers Morton formed in 1972, they played only “Free Jazz” inspired by the music of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis and the like. There were no tunes, key, time signatures, or any other agreements… “just play and let the music take you where it wants to go” was the rule. It still is.
In 2006 they started playing more in public and began to play original material that includes World Music, Jazz, American Songbook, and even Native American influences. Free Music is still the source from which these styles evolve, with lots of room for improvisation. Bob Van Stee (keyboards), Dave Collee (bass), Jim Beegle (trumpet, flute, congas), Dan Giacobassi (saxes, flutes), and Steve Harris (drums). facebook.com/CheckersMorton
