Free and Open to the Public Event!
The Puerto Rican Cultural Committee (PRCC) of West Michigan is excited to announce its 5th Annual ‘El Encuentro de Dos Culturas’ (The Encounter of Two Cultures) a celebration to be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 5:00-9:00pm at the Grand Rapids Community College Tassell M-Tech Building.
The main purpose of the event is to share the history of the Puerto Rican culture through an educational presentation, native music, and food. In partnership with the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, the PRCC is composed mostly of educators and community members, retired and active, who believe in maintaining cultural and linguistic ties to Puerto Rico, in promoting the importance of a good education, and contributing to the community.
As American citizens, Puerto Ricans have been part of the Grand Rapids community since the 1940’s. They have contributed to the community at large in private industry, agriculture, non-profit organizations, legal services, education, and the health/medical field. Although most Puerto Ricans in that era migrated to large cities like New York or Chicago, a significant number came to the Midwest communities, like Grand Rapids, with their families.
Last year’s event, brought over three hundred people to the Tassell M-Tech Buidling from all areas of West Michigan. We expect to double the attendance this year! It is our hope to see you all there to learn & support this culturally important event!
