‘May We Live In Interesting Times’ is an art show featuring the work of Natalie Schunk, Angel Bista, Dakota Gutierrez, Ethan Teranes and Chris Oliphant.
The premise is a Chinese apocryphal curse, ‘May you live in interesting times’, which juxtaposes interesting times against uninteresting times. Uninteresting times can be characterized by extended moments of peace and tranquility. Interesting times, rather, are chaotic and conflicting. Our aim is to welcome the chaos and conflict with open arms, for what other option is there?
Impressed, as we are by modernity, we both exalt and deny–we demand unity for what sometimes is at the same time we reject the world on the account of what it lacks.
The exhibition will feature paintings, photography prints, pottery, and music to accompany the opening reception; all of which will be the product of young, local, and prolific artists.
The opening reception will be held January 3rd from 6-9pm at 106 S Division Ave, Grand Rapids. Open hours are TBD, however, a second, hosted viewing time will be Saturday, January 18th. The exhibition will remain open through the end of the month.
