50.YEARS.STRONG aka HALF A CENTURY! Festival of the Arts is celebrating a major milestone as the longest running festival in Michigan and YOU’RE INVITED! Find out what you can expect when you attend this weekend’s event.
The 2019 Festival of the Arts will take place on June 7, 8 and 9. This free event is a celebration of every type of art form including dance, music, literature, media, visual arts and design. The art featured will represent the West Michigan counties of Kent, Ottawa, Ionia, Allegan, Muskegon, Mountcalm, Barry and Newago. Locals in attendance can look forward to enjoying exhibits, performances and children’s activities.
Now for a little history lesson. The origin of the festival dates back to 1969. At that time, Alexander Calder’s La Grande Vitesse was installed in front of City Hall in downtown Grand Rapids. The 43 foot tall sculpture’s vibrant red color and larger than life presence inspired a celebration that would become an annual event in the Grand Rapids area.
This year’s festival will include a variety of activities and experiences – all are listed on the festival’s web site. There will also be several food trucks and vendors on site. Beer will be provided by Amber of the Arts, along with an exclusive one time brew by Perrin Brewing.
Festival of the Arts always makes for a great cultural experience in the city of Grand Rapids. Be sure to mark your calendars for the first weekend in June to find out about the artistic endeavors the community has to offer this year.
