The Hilton Hotel chain announced this week that their new concept, the Canopy by Hilton, will anchor the Eastern portion of the Studio Park movie theater and mixed use project planned behind the Van Andel Arena. The fledgling hotel line will be the “first of its kind” in Michigan according to the developers.
The eight story 164 room hotel will border the piazza of the new Studio Park development, which plans to break ground in March/April of 2018. Lodgeco Hospitality, a Mount Pleasant hotelier that operates 19 hotels in Michigan, announced it will open the new hotel in the fourth quarter of 2019. The hotel will overlook the piazza of the theater development but will also front Ionia Avenue between Oakes and Cherry Streets.
The $110 Million Studio Park project is being spearheaded by J.D. Loeks, President of Celebration!Cinema and developer Olsen Loeks, and will encompass a block of land currently occupied by two city-owned surface lots just South of the Van Andel Arena. Contrary to popular belief, the project will replace the parking lost with a 750 car parking ramp.
Plans for Studio Park include the Canopy by Hilton Hotel, a nine screen first-run Celebration!Cinema movie theater, retail space with apartments above, an office building being developed by Franklin Partners of Chicago, and a public piazza that will serve as a “10th screen” for the movie theater. Phase II plans include a 16 story residential tower at the Southwest end of the project.
Studio Park is one of a slew of new developments coming to downtown Grand Rapids that we announced back in December of 2016 (previously named Studio C).
