We all know how important helmet safety is and, to raise awareness, the Grand Rapids Griffins Hockey Team will be hosting the ‘Lids at the Library’ event. Lids at the Library will include a number of fun community events including the giving away of two hundred bike helmets. The helmets will be given to children aged 1-12 at local library locations and will be part of the 15th annual summer of the Griffith’s Put a Lid on It bike helmet safety program.
Lids at the Library will kick off with a two day event taking place at the Kentwood Library Branch on Tuesday June 19 at 2 PM and at the Grand Rapids Van Belkum Branch on Tuesday June 26 at 2 PM. On these days, children are invited to the libraries to be fitted for their free helmets. They will also receive a tee shirt and poster featuring this year’s PALOI theme (a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt), “With Freedom Comes Responsibility”. An ice cream truck will also be on site at the Kentwood Branch to distribute free treats.
PALOI has been promoting helmet safety in the community for many years. Their efforts are not limited to the Lids at the Library campaign. They also distribute posters to schools, libraries and businesses in an effort to raise awareness.
Children are also welcomed to visit the Griffins Hockey website and sign the online pledge to always wear a helmet when riding their bicycles. These children will be rewarded with two free tickets to a 18-19 Griffiths hockey game and automatically registered in a drawing to win a new bike.
Wearing a helmet can save a number of lives every year. The events being promoted by PALOI and the Griffins team should serve to provide fun activities for the community, but also enforce the underlying message of how important it is to stay protected when riding a bike. Encourage your children to become involved in the PALOI cause by supporting these worthwhile events.
