GR{KNOW} | Grand Rapids Ballet Debuts Virtual Programs with #GRBathome

The first program, Classic and Contemporary, features video recordings of former performances available online to offer #stayhome entertainment

When’s the last time you went to the ballet? Whether earlier this year or not once before, the notion of “going to the ballet” connotes an event that can be described as ceremonious; in different times, the special occasion marked an evening on the town, often paired with dinner out — maybe even a nightcap. So, it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when considering entertainment in the midst of a pandemic, but there’s no time like the present to experience new things from the comfort of your home.

That’s why the Grand Rapids Ballet‘s introduction of its Virtual Programs is such a welcome development. With a curated selection of former Company performances, the first compilation includes George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Danielle Rowe’s November, and Alejandro Cerrudo’s Extremely Close.

Some cultural variety to offset the many Netflix binges, Program I is available online for a limited time — 72 hours — starting this Friday, May 15 at 7 pm, accessible to those who make a donation of any amount by Thursday, May 14. Program II will be available June 12.

While the occasion of a night at the ballet may look a bit different these days, it can still be special. Grab yourself some local takeout, put on something other than sweatpants (or don’t), and support the arts this weekend.
