As the year comes to a close, there are many community events that are being held to honor those who did their part in making valuable improvements locally. One of these events is the LINC UP Community Spirit Awards. This year’s ceremony will be a special one as it will feature social activist and author of Our Black Year, Margarita ‘Maggie’ Anderson. LINC UP’s mission is to improve the quality of life in its community by offering valuable resources to local families and businesses. Their awards ceremony will be held at the Wealthy Theatre on Thurs. Oct. 11 from 6:00-8:30 PM. There will also be a post-reception event held at 40 Acres Soul Kitchen with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the organization. These events are free to attend but guests must RSVP in advance here, or by calling 616-451-9140.
This year’s ceremonies will be especially exciting due to its guest speaker. Anderson’s book chronicles a year her family conducted a social experiment buying only from black-owned businesses. She used the results of their experiment to determine the impact of supporting black-owned businesses on the American economy and how it can help revitalize struggling communities.
Attending this ceremony will give guests the opportunity to learn more about their community, to better understand the economy, and learn valuable life lessons. It will also be a chance to recognize those who have worked to better their communities in the past year. Be sure to mark your calendars for this exciting event.
