When we think of supporting the arts in our community, we think of music, paintings, dance performances…. But what about chalk? Although we may not think of it as such, chalk has been an art form used by many of us before we even started school and, with a bit of creativity, it can be elevated to be considered awe inspiring street art. Still not convinced? Maybe you should consider checking out the 2018 West Michigan Chalk Art Festival which will be taking place at Tanger Outlets in Grand Rapids on June 15 and 16.
The Chalk Art Festival is an annual event that takes place in the Grand Rapids area. Artists come from all around the world to share their chalk creations with the community. A Grand Prize of $1000 is awarded to the most inspiring creation.
The event will start on Friday June 15 at 8 PM and end on June 16 at 5 PM. It is free for the public to attend while participating artists must register in advance. Fees will vary depending on the category you are participating in. Artists must be 18+ but there is also a Kid’s Chalk area which is open on Saturday from 11AM-3 PM. Here, children can show off their chalk creativity for free.
The Chalk Art Festival is guaranteed to be a fun time for the whole family. Guests will be amazed to learn that chalk is can be used for so much more than creating a hopscotch board!
